Perfection is Not Pursued Here- Episode 2

On the podcast we’re kicking off with a mini three-part series, breaking down the podcast motto, and first, we’re discussing the perfection pursuit.

Perfection is not pursued here, the process is embraced, and progress is celebrated.

On This Journey Podcast Motto

I’ve decided to make these posts more of a quick breakdown (outline) of the main points, as well as a link to any important resources mentioned in the episode.

Episode 2: Stop Pursuing Perfection

  • Perfection is unattainable, and we have to stop allowing our pursuit of perfection to be more of a hindrance than of help to us.

Examples of this: pursuing the perfect timing, the perfect website, photos, equipment, etc. before we allow ourselves to even start or move forward to the next step in going after our dreams. Or, needing to pursue the perfect “summer body” before we will allow ourselves to fully enjoy the beach, water parks, festivals, etc. that come with the summer season.

  • Done is better than perfect.

I’ve had my podcast mic for over a year before I even got started. I had to realize, done really is better than perfect. Otherwise, we (not just you, this is for me as well) will always be able to find an “excuse” to why we can’t start or take the next step.

Sidenote: It is my goal to err on the side of “done well” is better than perfect. Done well, within reason and for what I have at that time. Ex. If I’m writing, I will read over and if I can, even have my husband read it, to minimize the number of typos and errors. Some still slip through but I can be happy in knowing I didn’t literally just “throw” out anything, I did give it effort, attention and care.
  • Stop being afraid to be wrong, to mess up, to do it badly, and to be criticized for it

My first photos did not look like the photos I take now, however; I was still able to add value and create something my then clients loved and cherish. Today, I would not deliver those photos and be proud, but I’ve put in hours of education and practice since I first started 4 years ago. Today, my work has greatly improved but it is still not perfect.

  • The pursuit of perfection is another excuse, and another type of procrastination and fear.
  • Instead of pursuing perfection we are going to focus on pursuing purpose. It’s time we give ourselves the grace to mess up, to fall, to learn along the way, to keep showing up and putting one foot in front of the other.

Remember, even Beyonce’ has fallen on stage.

Here, you can take the pressure off, no perfection is needed. We’re going to embrace and find joy in the journey to becoming our best selves. Next episode we’ll dive into “Embracing the Process”.

Power, passion, and purpose are only three of many things that come to mind when I read any of Tinita's creations. The depth and meaning she gives to her words is nothing short of a piece of art.
